“Harmony” was the perfect name for this painting and it came to me quite early in the painting process. I had the intention of reflecting the spirit of marriage for two friends of mine. The word “harmony” gives a feeling of blended uniqueness to create a wholeness of beauty and strength beyond what the individual parts could achieve separately. It seems very fitting for a wedding. The bright, bold colours have their own unique qualities but when brought together they are enlivened by the contrast; supporting each other and creating a harmony that can only be possible together. The painting is built up of many layers that overlap and create a relationship that is complex and textured.
Trembling aspen (poplar) trees are a beautiful metaphor from nature for the word “harmony”. They have a white powdery bark, with glossy green leaves that turn vibrantly rich in the fall. Poplar trees appear to be individuals that are distinct and separate from each other, but below the surface, out of obvious view, the poplars are all connected by underground rhizomes. The trees that appear separate are really one; supporting and giving life to each other, not competing but enriching their lives. Like the colourful background, together they create a synergy that is stronger, greater and more beautiful than the individuals. They are in harmony with each other and with the natural world around them.
My wish is that Monica and Georgie have a life of harmony together and that this painting reflects the spirit of this special day. Big love to you both. xo
