Today I changed the sheets on my bed. (I know this sounds like a bad Facebook post, but stay with me.) I absolutely LOVE clean sheet day. I love everything about it - the smooth, fresh, crisp, perfectly tucked sheets just make a bed brand new again. You KNOW what I'm talking about; it's heavenly. Every clean sheet day is like a do-over for my bed; a resurrection from the tired, uninspired state that it was, right back to magnificence and perfection. Ahhh, that's a reward after a long day.
Clean-sheet day has become more than just a chore on the domestic check list. It has become a metaphor for living: that really, every single day can be "clean-sheet day". Every day is crisp and fresh and brand new and can be the start of something…. anything! We don't have to wait until January 1st to feel renewed and start over and try again. Every single day can be a January 1st, ripe with possibility and magnificence. January 1st is only one of 365, yet how much weight do we put in that one day? It's just too much pressure for 24 hours to fulfill. How can we expect what happens at the beginning of the year to sustain us 364 times in a row, without fail? All those big plans and intentions often don't make it exactly as planned from start to finish, because we are human, and you can't plan life exactly. And that's OK, because January 1st is just a number and clean sheet day can happen whenever I want. And it can for you too. Be gentle on yourself. Start over. And over. And over. And if you weren't your most inspired, stellar self today, don't worry, you can wipe the slate clean and start fresh again tomorrow. Happy clean-sheet day to you.
